3 Idiots, the much-loved Bollywood film is making headlines once again. Director Rajkumar Hirani has revealed a big development regarding the much-anticipated sequel of the movie. Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi and Kareena Kapoor Khan starred this comedy-drama of 2009, which has been one of the most popular films of Hindi cinema. Now, Hirani has announced that the sequel is being worked on, but the script is still being penned and an official announcement hasn’t been released.
The sequel of the 3 Idiots is set to see the original cast of actors reunite, including Rancho, Farhan and Raju. Hirani’s next comment: “It’s not just going back to their college days. Rather, it will delve into the fate of characters many years after the events of the original film. The story is said to be based on a major time shift, providing the characters with a new life stage to navigate.
The original film 3 Idiots was released in India on 25th December 2009, directed by Rajkumar Hirani and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. Aamir Khan brought ranchhoddas “Rancho” Chanchad, R. Madhavan was Farhan Qureshi and Sharman Joshi was Raju Rastogi. Kareena Kapoor Khan, Boman Irani and Omi Vaidya were also a part of the memorable ensemble.
The first was a big hit at the box-office and was especially successful abroad. Based on available box-office data, its gross is estimated to be around ₹460 crore globally, but can be different according to the method of counting. The success of the film, along with the various themes of friendship, education and pressure to succeed, helped transform it into a cultural phenomenon that lasted for a long time.
A fourth Idiot – Vicky Kaushal is rumoured to be considered for the part – is also in the talks for the new cast of the story. This, however, should be considered a report, not confirmed casting. In his latest comments Hirani has made clear that the original cast has not been dissolved from the sequel and that the filmmakers are still toying with the story.
The most significant thing for fans of 3 Idiots is that the sequel is well on its way, but it isn’t ready yet and doesn’t have a confirmed release date. Rajkumar Hirani has put it out that the story must be good, before the production can move forward. Rancho, Farhan and Raju will mark a new phase in their lives, if the project manages to maintain the essence of the original, it may turn out to be one of the most anticipated sequels in Bollywood. 3 Idiots sequel update: Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi are set to return in the highly anticipated sequel of the 2009 film 3 Idiots, says Rajkumar Hirani.
