Paramount Pictures has confirmed that the sequel to Days of Thunder will be released in cinemas on June 2, 2028, almost 40 years after the original came out. The new film will be released with the high-end formats like Dolby Cinema and 4DX, and IMAX screens. The “big scale” approach will be a testament to Paramount’ desire to make the NASCAR sequel a “big screen” event with lots of high-speed, action and NASCAR immersion.
Director Jonathan Levine has been confirmed and Will Staples is the screenplay writer. Cruise is also behind the production of the film along with Jerry Bruckheimer and Tommy Harper. Bruckheimer’s involvement is even more significant because he was also a producer on the original Days of Thunder from the ’90s film, and ties the new film to the original’s creative vision.
Director Tony Scott’s original Days of Thunder follows NASCAR star Cole Trickle, and stars Nicole Kidman, Robert Duvall, Randy Quaid and John C. Reilly. But not much is known about the sequel yet, and the cast is yet to be finalised as well, but Cruise will be back and Hathaway will be joining, which gives the project a lot of star power. The movie is additionally another substantial bequest from Cruise subsequent to the super successful and memorable Top Gun: Maverick.
